I went to the Farm Chicks sale on Saturday as I had seen it covered in Country Living Magazine. It was mainly booths with lots of vintage items and antiques. My only purchase was some homemade dog bones (not vintage or antique) that the beasts loved. I then hit the local Farmer's Market even though it was cold and raining - the vendors were all in good spirits. I bought a HUGE bag of salad greens for $2.00, 2 basil plants (pictured at left) for $4.00 and lots of rhubarb for $2.00. Not a very pricey expedition to say the least. I have been inspired by my night time reading of "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" to buy local as much as possible.
I don't think that summer would be summer without rhubarb. I made a crisp and had it for dinner and then had some of my salad afterwards. (I just eat all of the time these days) Rhubarb grows like a weed in Alaska and it seems strange to buy it. There is a house with 2 HUGE plants by the lake where I walk the dogs and it doesn't seem to get pilfered very often. How would I go about this? Ring the bell and say, I see you have some rhubarb that you don't seem to use. Would you like me to take it off your hands? I could put an ad in the paper maybe, "Wanted: your unused and unloved rhubarb plants." Or, I could just plant my own next summer...

ps. we missed you this weekend!
I love rhubarab too. If you want some recipes I have a good one for rhubarb cake (with warm vanilla sauce) and rhubarb raspberry crisp.
I wish we could send some warmth your way, Ohio still is sweltering in 90 degree heat and humidity! Poor dogs are melting......
LOVE the pic with baby moose too!
I have rhubarb and you can have some of both plants and stems. Do you think we are ever going to have summer weather? This weather is getting on my nerves - going to do some painting today - tga

I'm with Lu . . . steal it!

Lia,
No stealing . . . no matter what your evil sisters say! Just ask. They probably don't even have a clue what rhubarb is. You could always offer to bring them a loaf of rhubarb bread and I have a great recipe for that.

PS What do the mushroom ladies have to do with ethics, anyway?
