It was such a blustery evening that prevented my usual evening of outside knitting. There were fires in the hills above Spokane and it was even smokey at my place quite a ways away. There had been gusts up to 40 mph making it very hard to put out the fires. There is a field across the street from my house, but luckily they had cut the grass and baled it recently. Sahale sat outside for a while and the wind was blowing her ears back.

It made me think about what to grab if I was forced to evacuate. Of course, the dogs would be first into the car. We have a box of important documents (and copies of all pictures I have taken on cds) that should be taken as well. Other than that, everything can be easily replaced if needed. I am sure that I could find other things to toss in, but as long as the beasts are safe I would be happy. It made me feel a bit happy to realize that as long my loved ones are safe, life could go on even if I didn't have my material possessions.

I was indeed impressed with the wind I viewed by Skype. Missy enjoyed Skyping as well and I think she'll be looking forward to chatting with you in the future.

Lia,

I met Marnice and Swede at the airport at 12:30 AM. They arrived safe and sound after a good flight.

This AM I'm off to kick-boxing and then on to my old ladies' biking group.

Life is good in Alaska.

We saw the smoke on the way to the airport but had no idea until this morning of the damage done. Overcast here. Birthday Party for Bill and maybe Bob if he shows at Don's cabin at the Lake. tga

Sweet jesus...there are fires up by you too? We have had beautiful sunsets because Big Sur is up in flames right now too.

We used to worry about what to grab. Now I have all my docs and photos backed up on jungledisk. Secure storage offline using Amazon.com's S3 data storage facility. Cost is only fifteen cents per Gigabyte per month, and you can schedule an automatic daily backup. Now with all my data secured offsite, in emergency I just grab keys, phone, wallet, and kid. Important papers are in a fire safe so they'll be here when we get back.

Another thing I do is keep a scan of everything in my wallet (and passport) on a USB flash drive stashed in the trunk of my car. The less you have to grab in an emergency, the faster you can bug out.
